. PROFESSOR SAADIA AMIEL PRESENTED WITH THE HEVESY MEDAL FOR 1977 Professor SAADIA AMIEL obtained his Ph. In nuclear chemistry at the He- brew University and the Weizmann Institute in 1955. He then spent three years in the United States, at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory of the University of Cali- fornia and at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, doing research on transuranium elements and nuclear reactions.
On his return to Israel, he devoted most of his energy to the establishment and organization of the Nuclear Chemistry Department at the Soreq Nuclear Research Centre. He divided his activities between pure research and the development of practical applications of nuclear energy. He was one of the pioneers in the field of activation analysis and contributed greatly to its development. With his charac- teristic energy and originality of thought, he investigated and introduced new tech- niques which simplified activation analysis, made it more universally applicable and increased its accuracy. The great number of papers published by Professor AMIEL and his many contributions to international conferences on the subject of activation analysis reflect the range of his activity in this field. Professor AMIEL used the counting of delayed neutrons from fission for the nondestructive and highly sensitive determination of uranium and thorium in sam- ples of natural origin, especially geological samples. He also used the same prin- ciple for the determination of the isotopic composition of uranium.
This method has been introduced in laboratories throughout the world. When Ge(Li) detectors became available, Professor AMIEL early recognized the advantages for activation analysis which could be obtained from their high resolu- tion. He recommended the use of multiple gamma peak-ratios in order to increase the accuracy of activation analysis and used this method for the development of highly accurate analytical methods for the determination of many elements in vari- ous matrices. A further important and original contribution was the application of X-ray spectro- metry to activation analysis. By making use of the properties of X-rays, he succeeded in developing highly sensitive and accurate methods for the determination of trace elements. Recently, he and his group succeeded in greatly increasing the applicabil- ity of nondestructive neutron activation analysis followed by X-ray spectrometry, Z RaclioanaL Chem.
45 (1978) 273. by eliminating the interference of beta rays by means of magnetic fields. As in the case of delayed neutron counting, this technique was received with great interest and many scientists are attempting to apply it. These contributions are only a sampling of Professor AMIEL's multifaceted work in the field of nuclear activation. In 1972, Professor AMIEL was appointed Kranzberg Professor of Nuclear and High Energy Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He encouraged nu- merous M. Sc and Ph.D research projects on the subject of activation analysis which were carried out under his supervision at the Nuclear Chemistry Department of the Soreq Nuclear Research Centre.
Professor AMIEL has been a member of the International Committee for Modern Trends in Activation Analysis since 1968. He has also been a member of the edito- rial board of the Journal of Radioanalytical Chemistry since it was first published in 1966 and of several other journals such as the lournal of Chemical Instrumenta- tion from 1966 to 1972 and the Israel Journal of Chemistry from 1971 to date. This in addition to holding the post of President of the Israel Chemical Society from 1970 to 1973 and holding a senior NSF fellowship (foreign) at the Washing- ton University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1972.

Professor AMIEL has held a number of positions as consultant for the IAEA and in this capacity he visited southeast Asia, Turkey, Greece and Mexico. One of his tasks in these countries was to help introduce and develop the technique of activation analysis. Professor AMIEL, with unusual foresight has always been enthusiastic in his support and encouragement of young scientists and the exploration of new ideas and directions.
